Seine Kollegen Leonard Bernstein und Aron Copland sollen sich über seine Kompositionen abfällig geäußert haben, und für das deutsche Publikum dürfte er noch ein großer Unbekannter sein. Doch seine amerikanische Karriere kann sich sehen lassen. William Grant Still (1895-1978) hat dort alles erreicht, was einem farbigen Künstler in seiner Zeit möglich war. In der Familie schon früh musikalisch gefördert, erhielt er eine umfassende Ausbildung als Instrumentalist und Komponist, war auf beiden Gebieten erfolgreich und daneben noch als Arrangeur und Plattenproduzent tätig.
